What Does ISO 9001 Certification Mean?

ISO 9001

Sloan Electromechanical Service & Sales is the only company in our industry in California to be awarded ISO 9001:2008 certification. The ISO 9001:2009 certification is the world’s highest recognition for meeting manufacturing and service stands of excellence. If you are not familiar with this certification, read on to see what ISO 9001 certification means, and what the certification process entails.

ISO 9001 is a document that outlines the standards an organization must maintain during its operation. It is the most widely used standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS) in the world, with approximately 1.1 million issued certificates in 178 countries. ISO 9001 provides a framework that guides interactions in an organization to guarantee employee, customer and stakeholder satisfaction. Essentially, it helps service providers and organizations ensure that their products and services continue to meet customer satisfaction, and that quality is always improved upon.

Steps to acquiring ISO 9001 certification include first completing a quick online application form, undergoing an assessment by an accredited auditing organization, and finally, receiving the certification.

A Little More On ISO

With over 17,000 published standards in every business field, the International Organization for Standardization, or ISO for short, remains one of the most internationally trusted and largest standards-developing associations.

ISO 9001—which is one of those standards—sets out the requirements of a quality management system.

What does ISO 9001 Signify

Organizations that qualify for ISO 9001 have a strong customer focus, strive for the best brand, product, and reputation in its industry, and take a factual and systemic approach to decision making and management.

In plain terms, companies with ISO 9001 are consistently seeking to take their services to the next level.

ISO 9001 and Quality Management Principles (QMPs)

The certification is based on the seven QMPs listed below, with the belief that application and improvement on these seven principles take a company to the next level. Note that a few of these principles were briefly addressed above.

The QMPs are as follows:

QMP1: A customer focused organization

QMP2: Leadership

QMP3: Engagement of people

QMP4: Process approach

QMP5: Improvement

QMP6: Evidence-based decision making

QMP7: Relationship management

Benefits of ISO 9001

Achieving ISO certification is a challenge that pays off. In achieving ISO 9001, Sloan Electromechanical Service & Sales has had to document every step to achieve quality product. We are obliged to undergo annual audits in order to maintain certification. But ultimately, the hard work to achieve certification is worth the effort.
